Hops Rhizomes

Howdy,

Has anyone here tried growing hops in Canada? if so where are you from and how was the experience.

Also where can someone buy Hop Rhizomes in Canada. I hear it is a pain to ship plants across the boarder.

Cheers,
Matthew

these guys are in BC and ship across Canada:
Crann?g Ales - Our Farm

I haven't dealt with them personally. I thought about putting in an order last year but never did. As I posted in another thread there is a guy in the Annapolis valley here in NS that has a pretty good crop going. I have an indirect connection to him and I'd may very well look into acquiring and planting a sprig or two in my backyard.

I have grown my own for the past 2 years. Started with a seedling and have continued on from there. They are a pretty hearty plant and not difficult to grow at all. I live just outside of Windsor Ontario and they are a nice plant but do require area to grow. My plants grow over my 2 story roof. Here's a good link to introduce you to it as well: Growing Hops in the Garden-How to Grow Beer Hops

So what type of hops are you growing in Windsor, I'm just up in London, do all the varieties grow or are some better for our climate? (didn't read article yet, doing that now)

I'm in Ottawa and have good success growing hops.
I've been getting about 10-13 lbs wet per plant of nugget, centennial and cascade.
I'm going to try to plant some goldings and wilamette for next year.

Spalt, Cascade, and Goldings are the hops i have grown so far. I'm adding Centennial and Hallertau this coming year to the mix as well. I've had no problem growing any variety so far, you can grow them almost easier than weeds. A little tip I picked up in the second year that made it a little easier to harvest, what ever you're growing them by use a pulley and some strong twine to train the bines to go up. I use poles by my house with a pulley at the top, whenI assemble it, I run the twine through the pulley, set the pole up, tie the twine off. As the plant starts to grow, train the bine to go around the twine and that's it. When it's time to harvest, cut the twine and you can harvest from the ground.

You may want to try these guys. They are in Ontario.

Your Cascade and Willamette varieties come from my backyard (almost) in Woodburn Oregon. It's a tad chillier up in Washington where the vast majority are grown so Southern Canada should be fine.
