solved a poltergeist mystery
My cat and I have been staying at my mother's house in Bridgetown for a month. Last month, Mom switched from Time Warner to using a satellite dish with DirecTV.
I have been periodically wakened very early (3-4 a.m.) in my old bedroom by weird noises in the hallway. I ruled out "critters" in the attic or walls because the cat would have noticed them. And although the sounds were kind of creepy (tittering, whispering, slight moaning), I figured that they could NOT have been ghosts or alien transmissions.
I assumed it was the satellite dish but had no idea how it would have made these noises. I mentioned the problem to one of the techie guys at work and he said that Cincinnati Bell sends out encryption codes to the dishes very early every morning to prevent hacking. He also explained that the satellite dish has a phone inside it whose receiver sounds like a fax machine. The phone might be making these noises as it receives the new codes.
It's also been windy or very rainy or very snowy here this month, and I am sure the various types of weather would help create different types of noises.
I've not been awakened early since our conversation. Relieved that I didn't have to hire an exorcist!
