grading systems

From what I've been reading, the ABCDF grading system is much more lenient now, from first grade through college. Or is this just in certain areas? Or did the Catholic grade schools and high schools in the 1970s just have a less lenient grade system?
This is what I mean by currently:
A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F 59 or below

But this is what I remember. In fact, this was listed in our high school folders.
A+ 99, 100
A 96, 97, 98
A- 93, 94, 95
B+ 91, 92
B 88, 89, 90
B- 86, 87
C+ 84, 85
C 81, 82, 83
C- 78, 79, 80
D+ 76, 77
D 73, 74, 75
D- 70, 71, 72
F 69 or below

Yes this is pretty much how it was by what you remember. I noticed the very beginning of the change to a more leinent grading system in the early to mid 1970's. I left to college in 1974 but this was just beginning to happen in 1971 or so as I remember. The bell curve really pissed me off because it put more students in the upper 5% of given grades that otherwise shouldn't/wouldn"t be there. I believed, at the time, this was totally unfair and demotivating to accel for some.

I used to be one of the kids that got 98% to 100% test scores on near everything and would rarely associate with anyone who got much less than a "B" average.
