losing education over the summer

If you are 40-something or older, did you forget everything you learned during the previous school year over your summer vacation? Did your school have to review for the first six weeks or so the material covered in the previous grade?
I went to school in the 1970s. I doubt I lost much of my school memories during June, July and August. I don't remember my teachers in my new grade having to cover everything from the year before for the first few months of the new school year. For a day or two, perhaps, but after that it was all new material.
I keep reading about the "brain drain" over summer vacation but it is something I doubt I ever experienced. Did you?
