I have lived in the area for a while and I remember when the steel plant used to be in full force in Steelton it seemed less crappy. I think there have been attempts made to revitalize the downtown area slightly, though with 'restaurant row' near the capitol and the Whitaker center near the square.

I've lived in York for many years, and I find very few reasons to go to Harrisburg. A few events at the Farm Show complex, that's about it. I find Lancaster infinitely more appealing as a place to visit... and if I want a bigger city feel Pittsburgh, Philly and Baltimore are close enough and also more appealing.

Of course, York is even worse than Harrisburg...

If I had to live in the Harrisburg area, my choice would be the Camp Hill area.

It seems to be free of all the "problems" associated w/ Harrisburg!

I agree, Camp hill isn't so bad.

I think the main problem is not enough interesting stuff to do here. The city is boring. We have no good shopping section. The only thing really developed now is the clubs. If that's not your thing, might as well stay home.

Harrisburg City is not that great, but there are a lot of nice areas that surround the city.

I would agree with most of everything mentioned. The city itself really isn't too appealing, but the outskirts aren't bad. I'm from Lebanon myself and rarely find a reason to head into the city though.

I believe the problem is that being the state capitol, you expect more from it so you are disappointed when you see it. Thats just my op.
