Its actually NE Iowa.. not NW...
There is a bunch of state parks in Iowa, some decent ones, Backbone, Ledges, BlueMounds. There is also the Bridges of Madison county(cool to see if your nestalgic)
It all depends on when you would come as well, there are tons of festivals at different times of year, DesMoines always has somthing going on. BUT its not any different from any other metropolotian area, except that it is a "large" city that feels like a small town.
ADEL sweet corn festival is one really good one, all the sweet corn you can eat.
