It all depends on when you would come as well, there are tons of festivals at different times of year, DesMoines always has somthing going on. BUT its not any different from any other metropolotian area, except that it is a "large" city that feels like a small town.

ADEL sweet corn festival is one really good one, all the sweet corn you can eat.
Ha.. oops.. I meant Northeast. northwest iowa you have.. the house of corn kernels lol

You could take a walk through of all the homes and businesses that were destroyed by the flood.

First,,,,, come between late late spring to early fall ;-)

Iowa is not as flat as many people think,,,,, but it sure aint the Rockies ;-)

If your'e a Biker (bycicle), come for Ragbria and pedal accross the state eating home pie and other wonderful things. There are really alot of bike trails around Des Moines.

RAGBRAI

Iowa State Fair is second largest State Fair (to Texas).

You could visit some of Iowa's great breweries and wineries. There are some really cool small brewpubs scattered around the state and some nice wine trails. http://www.iowawineandbeer.com/
