Planning our 10 year anniversary need info.

Hello everyone,

My wife wants to go to Vegas for our 10 year wedding anniversary. Ironically, neither of us like to gamble.. lol.. but we both know that there is more to Vegas then that.

So with that in mind, I would like to know some "insider" tips on what to do and see in Vegas.. What do the locals do? Where do they go? What are the best shows to check out.. places to eat?

Kind of Vague, I know, but hopefully you get the jist of what im asking.. I would like to go and enjoy the city, but not look like a total tourist, which i am sure will happen anyway.. but Id like to have a better idea of what to do then the average tourist.

Thanks in advance

I was stationed in Vegas for about two years. I was never much of a gambler either. There is still plenty of things to do though. There is the obvious area of Las Vegas Boulevard with all the casinos and whatnot. Lake Mead is not too far away if you'd like to go boating and you're surrounded by mountains.

If you like German food though, I'd recommend the Hofbrau Haus across the street from the Hard Rock Casino. Word of warning though, make sure you look your bill over very carefully, they've tried to charge me for things I didn't order.

Chiming in late on this one Mike, but here's my $0.02.

Stay at a hotel off the strip! So many great places that aren't in the midst of the mayhem. M Resort is a beautiful place, Red Rock is a favorite spot for locals to mingle, even downtown if you want to walk around and people watch. I recommend Golden Nugget. They've redone a couple towers there and the rooms are nice. Great value.

Also, check out the Las Vegas Weekly website. It's one of the best publications out there to see what's going on every day. Some great local bands and events in there besides the standard fare of shows.

As Billy mentioned,
  • Lake Mead and Hoover Dam are a 30 minute drive.
  • Valley of Fire is about 40 minutes Northeast of the strip for great hiking, picnicking, sight seeing.
  • Mt. Charleston is 40 minutes Northwest of the strip for the same (horseback riding up there too)
  • Bonnie Springs is West of town and offers a quint Old West style day. Can do some horseback riding. Good little restaurant out there.
  • Pink Jeep tours are popular here. I've never gone, as I just pack up a cooler in the back of my Jeep and make my own tour.
Good luck & Happy Anniversary!

45 miles south of the Strip at mile post 11 on St. Rt. 165 is the Eldorado Mine. Tours thru an actual 1860s gold mine are given daily. Well worth the tour. Google 'Eldorado Mine' and take a look. The mine is now up to modern mine safety standards and is very educational. ........ NevSmith
