I'm not from ME, but my father was born in Bangor and grew up on Sebasticook Lake in Newport along with my uncle. My uncle lived there for 30+ years after the Navy until recently passing away. He and my father own(ed) several lake front cottages and my uncle built his house, over the period of those 30 years, on one of the open lots. My father inherited the house and is in the process of making it more kid-friendly so that we can spend a lot more time up there in the summer.
Regarding the "from far away" comment, that brought a chuckle. In my uncle's 30+ years, he served as a Newport police officer, firefighter, alderman, served most of those years as a consultant/volunteer engineer overseeing the lake's dam (much of his advice ignored over the years only to be adopted later on), resident $h!t-stirrer and personal submarine builder. Unlike my father, he was born in Hartford, CT, so even though my family had deep roots there (literally as we used to have a seed production farm there), he was still considered a flatlander by those born there.
