I lived in Kalamazoo from 2002 to 2004 and I tell this to everyone: it is the best kept secret in America. Perhaps that's not the best way to describe it, but here's a short list of what I loved about K'zoo:
Yeah compared to most cities in MI we have been fortunate. Crime wise as well. We just have the problem of being a great place for the crooks of detroit and more so chicago to take a road trip to.
I'll agree. Kzoo is a great city (even though I still firmly believe 99% of streets are one ways!) and WMU is one of the more affordable schools in southwest michigan.
My step-son lives in Kazoo and likes it very much. When I`m there I make sure and visit On Target gunshop. It`s the biggest I have seen and I do like a good gun store.

Just be glad you have Battle Creek to buffer you from the worst of it. I lived in BC most of my life until I moved to Vermont in '07. Got out just in time before all of the doors closed.
I think most of the southwest corner of the state is quite nice if you like a low cost of living and friendly people. I'm a little shy of an hour southwest of the zoo, but we get up that way regularly since South Bend, IN doesn't really have anything to offer unless you feel like getting shot.
