Its definitely a change of pace from the typical big city. On that note I still enjoy going to school there and when I'm back at home I wish I was back in the UP
A great place to live. If you need a big city there are plenty close by. I spend lots of time in Wisconsin since those cities are closer than lower Michigan. My son went to Ferris and it took 7 hours to get there. Now he is in Chiropractor school in Davenport, IA and I go through 3 states and still get there in 6 1/2 hours. I love the pace of living in the UP.
I wasnt born in the UP but I go here as soon as I could, and I hope to never leave, anytime I have to go south of the bridge ( trollville) I gringe a bit.
