I'm from Alabama, but I lived in MS for a couple of years as a teenager. The people there really are nice. There's also a lot of good deer hunting, if you like that sort of thing.

Our US Army Corps of Engineers Lakes - Arkabutla, Enid, Grenada, and Sardis: These are flood control lakes that are home to the finest crappie (white perch) fishing in the world. (Ross Barnett Lake is a Corps lake, but it is really shallow and not quite as big as the others)
Ole Miss Football - If you are a college football fan, Ole Miss and The Grove are a must-do. The Grove regularly receives national media attention as one of the top tailgating spots in the country.
MS Gulf Coast has mostly rebuilt since Hurricane Katrina, unlike over in New Orleans. Polar opposite cultures are just 80 miles apart. MS Coasties (and beyond) are friendly, helpful, and great food is everywhere.
Gotta get fed at the Shed! (National multi-award winning BBQ - Ocean Springs, Guflport & Hattiesburg!) Shed hosts a BBQ & Blues fest 3rd wkend in Sept.

Smoking the Sound - Held on the coast (Biloxi) every May. Some of the hottest powerboat racing around.
BridgeFest - Held in Bay St. Louis, it was to be a ont-time thing to celebrate the opening of the Bay-Pass Bridge. It's become an annual event at the foot of the Bridge on the Bay St. Louis side.
Crab Fest - Held at Our Lady of the Gulf Church, it's a large festival of crafts, assorted food and drink, as well as bands and family fun.
Mardi Gras - Every city on the coast boasts a Parade... If you've never attended a Fat Tuesday parade, you should...
Beauvoir - The last home of Jefferson Davis, it hosts a museum and a cemetary of Confederate Veterans. It also hosts an annual re-enactment of a Confederate Army Camp that's chock full of historical detail.
Stennis Space Center - Every engine used to put our Astronauts into space gets tested here. A new project "Stennisphere" is under construction and promises to be a world class entertainment and educational attraction.
We have fantastic restaurants that provide everything from fine dining down to home cooking that makes your mouth water. There's camping with whatever amenities that you might desire, Hotels of every description, Waterparks, Microbreweries, Concerts and Festivals all over the area. Fishing? We got it! And, as said before, great hunting. On the coast beaches, you can ski, windsurf, swim or just bake in the sun. Sunscreen is readily available for folks like me that don't tan and just burn...
There's National Forests, National Seashore, many State Parks and attractions that are truly meant for the family.
Don't make the mistake in thinking that it's all Casinos.
