Best place for winter smallmouth in central MO?

I just moved to St Robert and love the rivers and fishing. But once the temp dropped below 50, I can't catch anything more than a sunfish. I've read that smallies switch to minnows in the winter, but I can't find any deep rocky spots that are accessible by foot. I have a canoe but don't relish the thought of spending too much time in it when it's this cold.

Any ideas or techniques?

If you go down to lazy-dayz canoe and camp ground there's a nice long slow Eddy by the camping area that is pretty deep

I turn to crappie when it gets cold. This week we can ice fish though! I have the same problem in the winter. Too hard to find good spots in our area. Everything I know of is too shallow.
