Occupy Asheville

A support "occupation" protest is underway in Asheville, NC. It seems rather unfocussed as indicated in WLOS soundbites. Also, unlike the TEA Party the occupiers want the city of Asheville to subsidize its protest. Lost revenue for the parking lot they occupy coupled with other costs totals some $170K that the 53% would have to cover for the proposed six month demonstration (which they want to extend to one year).

In a recent soundbite a guy with a lower lip ring said he wasn't for socialism but that capitalism needed a mechanism so all(?) could share(?) in its goals.

neither hardcore communism nor hardcore capitalism make a great country, there should absolutely be rewards for hard work but the rich class shouldn't be able to hold down the poor either. It's far to easy to engineer a system of pretend capitalism that we have now where people don't realize all the mechanism designed to keep people down (for example employer provided healthcare).

beyond that we are a democracy, not a capitalistic country, yes a democracy with capitalistic tendencies for sure.... but at the end of the day we have the ability to choose a little bit of this and a little bit of that to create a socety of the people, that is the beauty of america's system (in theory)

you sure none of these people pay any local sales tax/property tax? really? forget the value of our ability to protest and that our government was founded on it, if it costs the government money then it has to go..... I think you would be happier under a middle eastern dictator, they don't allow people to speak up.

You've gone on tilt again, just maybe they are paying that 3/4% or whatever in sales tax or even property tax, but does that justify a free ride on the city for their unfocussed protest? It sure separates them from other protestors. Maybe capitalism needs some mechanism to fund protests along with sharing its goals?

Hopeully the PROTEST will be in the voting booth come November when the great Community-organizor-in chief gets replaced. I'd still vote for Scooby-Do before I'd vote for Barry.

or 6.75% sales, plus an income tax........ it's not a free ride, the city isn't providing them with anything, are you always this illogical? where did our founding fathers say a protest had to meet some level of focus according to some group of people's opinion? your statement is about as anti-american as it gets, people are unhappy and protesting, as our founding fathers would have wanted them to do in that situation and you don't seem to be able to understand this right. protesting is NOT something reserved for large groups with plenty of money with a single leader and permission from the government to hold a short term protest.....

A counter protest appears to be underway with rude wake-up horns early in the morning by a group called Carolina Stompers. Meanwhile the city council is going to discuss the expense in the upcoming council meeting. Let's hope they decide not to waste taxpayer funding on the debacle. Or like RJ they may decide it's OK and end up having to fund the Carolina Stompers as well.

loss of income is NOT the same as an expense (or funding them as you put it), it is hard to take your posts seriously when you make arguments like that.....

Where were all these protestors before the poo-poo hit the fan? I know where they were, sitting in their comfy cookie cutter houses, driving their Hummers back & forth making money hand over fist, some's parents were sending sweet little Jr., to college and then POOF the bubble pops and now it's THEIR fault. The dems & Reps and fat cats, have been selling us ALL out for yrs. and yrs., it was so obvious, but no one wanted to see it and now that it's a popped balloon these people want to protest what? everyone has a different answer. They just want to be like the 60's Hippies cause it's the new stupid idiotic FAD. So we're ALL in the hurt locker, now let's all go out and burn crap down and throw rocks at cops til the national guard gets called out on our butts and cost this country even MORE DEBT.

They're aimless fools. They don't even know what they want. Tomorrow they're supposed to come out and make their first demands, after a few months of worthless mulling.

The democrap's were scared of the grassroots tea party, so they tried to create their own, and looked unorganized and pathetic in the process!

I love it! I'm glued to the news!
