Voter Ignorance or Apathy?

I find that people on the street know little about economics and the deficit/debt situation. Obama and others play to them with partial truths. Many believe that a solution to the current crisis is merely a matter of compromise. They fail to realize that the balanced budget that democrats fear and republicans tout as the solution does not solve the crisis. With a balanced budget the debt still looms and would take 50 to 100 years to resolve even if we were to get serious about resolving it. For those that think debt is OK at what point should we stop its accrual, maybe when spending is twice revenue? Many not only don't know but don't care.

Seems that Obama cared at one time:
Quote:
?The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government can not pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.?

the democrats had it setup to have a surplus and be well on our way to paying it back by now, bush used that surplus up by giving it to the rich in tax cuts, wars and medicare spending. to now say we need to pay off those debts without increasing taxes to pay for what we already purchased but haven't paid for yet is absurd.

RIGHT NOW, during an economic recovery IS NOT the time to worry about reducing the deficit, what good is a paid down deficit if the country fails to regain an economy?, we should have been paying down our debt during the periods of economic boom, not during our "bust" periods, that is just ridiculous from an economic standpoint.

the big problem is when the economy is good people don't care and none of these republicans gave a damn about increasing the debt limit SEVEN times under bush when he single handedly DOUBLED our national debt in 8 years when he started with a surplus that could pay down our debt.

but the rich got their tax breaks so everything was good with republicans. even now the one thing they have repeatedly refused to back down from is the tax rate on the rich, they have little problems giving up on the balanced budget idea but will not give an inch on taxes.

Obamas deficit reduction plan is bigger and better than the republicans. If we were REALLY concerned about turning things around rather than playing political football under the tracklighting and cameras of "Celebrity Spotlight" then lets' raise the taxes on the rich to what they used to be. This whole bullheaded crap of the republicans is such nonesense. These guys need to get real for a change.

exactly, I might even take it a step further and say we should have a bill that says that combines a balanced budget with the restriction that no tax can be decreased until the debt is paid off, economically that would do far more to create jobs and improve the economy then lowering taxes and places the priorities first

1.) stable economy - financially speaking
2.) lower government spending as it must be paid for now and can not be pushed off for later not later (by getting people to realize what the costs truly are, people will be more upset)
3.) allows for wars and emergency spending if there is a plan to pay for them

ABC's Tapper keeps asking Carney where Obama's plan is. Carney is getting hot under the collar about it explaining that it's the congress that makes plans. So who is wrong here guys?

congress, the president can set a direction or goals but it's just fairly meaningless words, congress has the say and the president can veto it, granted the political party of the president will usually follow the presidents goals

Ben Stein nailed it on "Sunday Morning" (CBS). He aptly spelled out the carelessness on both sides that led to the dilemma. He concludes that kicking the can down the road is better than an immediate train wreck. I hope it will soon be posted to YouTube.
