It is a mental illness. We do those affected no favor by pretending it is not. Instead of seeking acceptance we should search for a cure. At one point 40 so years ago it was thought we could help them with their low self esteem issues with social acceptance so the medical field decided to reclassify gays out of the mental health status they once held. To be honest it worked to some degree but not totally. Many gays still feel the social stigma associated with the illness and the mental health status was not changed based on sound science or research...it was changed as a fell good experiment. Now Gays hope to further distance themselves from the idea they have a problem by forcing the idea that being gay is acceptable with marriage. The problem with this is it is not a cure and it takes away the traditional meaning of marriage. Destroying the institution of Marriage for the intended propose of uniting one man and one woman to form a family under one name. Try as they might gays can not conceive a family by copulation as intended by God.
I don't like the idea of civil unions much personal but that would be much preferred to the alternative of destroying the institution of Marriage.
Anyone gay or straight who's identity is defined by their sexuality has a problem. Any person gay or straight who would intentional get another persons poo on their junk has mental issues. That's just nasty..and very unhealthy.

"A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological pattern or anomaly, potentially reflected in behavior, that is generally associated with distress or disability, and which is not considered part of normal development of a person's culture."

The end of DADT; the acceptance of gay marriage in 9 states; sodomy laws have been deemed unconstitutional and rendered unenforceable. American culture is accepting homosexuality within the realm of "normal". As such, it cannot be considered a mental illness, no matter how much you want to foist that on people. (Incidentally, the homophobia you display can't be considered a mental illness at this time either - both homosexuality and homophobia are within the realm of "normal" behaviors within our culture.)

Identity is not defined by one's sexual orientation, but sexual orientation is part of one's identity.

homophobia is not a real condition...There is zero scientific data to support this a real condition. It is just a made up term Coined by George Weinberg, a psychologist, in the 1960s meant to quash the truth. Acceptance by some people makes nothing normal or right. The truth can not be amended to fit what some people want it to be. Being gay is a sexual mental disorder. Nothing to be ashamed of or to be used as an excuse to bully or belittle people who are affected. But it is not a platform for which the rest of society must make special allowances fore ether.
As we see "American culture is accepting homosexuality within the realm of "normal"....then must we eventually also accept Pedophilia as normal if enough people accept it?

As we see "American culture is accepting homosexuality within the realm of "normal"....
Seems we've had this conversation before. "Phobia" doesn't strictly mean "fear". "Hydrophobia" is the property of certain materials to be averse to water. "Xenophobia" is an aversion to foreigners. "Photophobia" doesn't mean "afraid of light" it means "averse to light" - photophobia is a condition wherein lights of typical brightness cannot be comfortably tolerated.

"Homophobia" is an aversion to homosexuality. Nothing more, nothing less. It most certainly exists.

The constitution accepted slavery as normal. Why? Because enough people wanted it.

The ancient Greeks and Romans widely practices pederasty - homosexual relationships between men and boys. In their culture, this was "normal".

In Spain, the age of consent is currently set at 13. In England in 1275, it was 12. In various societies around the world and throughout history, arranged marriages have been conducted between adult men and children as young as 2 years. All these practices were considered "normal" in these cultures.

In some cultures, polygamy is considered "normal". In some cultures, sacrificing virgins was considered "normal". In some cultures, women don't shave their legs or armpits - this is considered "normal". In some cultures, women wear stacks of metal bands and stretch their necks so far that they are effectively paralyzed without those bands. This is "normal". In some cultures, men wear a large plate in their lower lip. In some cultures, women bind their feet so tightly for so long that their toes curl under their feet. In some cultures, women wear a red dot in the middle of their forehead. In some cultures, children are ritually scarred over their entire face. In some cultures, girls have their clitorises removed. All these things are - or were - "normal" for their cultures.

So what if those things were normal for those cultures???? I know that I don't want our culture to evolve into one that considers homosexuality "normal"..... Our culture is evolving into one in which anything goes that makes someone happy. Anything goes no matter how disgusting or selfish.... (not referring solely to homosexuality).... Our society is becoming more self involved into whatever perversions peak our interests. It is just gross. And sad.

That's not true. There's no real call for bestiality. There's no real call for pederasty or pedophilia. There's no real call for the wearing of plates in lips, or any of those other things I mentioned.

You don't get to decide what other people consider normal. You can only decide for yourself. If most people agree with you, someone who disagrees will be abnormal.

Yes, our culture is evolving into one where "anything goes that makes someone happy". Sort of. The caveat is "So long as it doesn't harm anyone participating". Isn't that the definition of "liberty"?

Unless we change the general guidelines of 'being of sound mind and judgement to LEGALLY give consent' then your paranoia is just that.

Sorry, CHILDREN cannot legally consent.
ANIMALS cannot consent (legally or illegally)

Homosexual/Transsexual/Heterosexual/Bisexual ADULTS can.

I'd really like your opinion on this:

"Yes, our culture is evolving into one where "anything goes that makes someone happy". Sort of. The caveat is "So long as it doesn't harm anyone participating". Isn't that the definition of "liberty"?"

The only thing I could say to answer you would be this:

If the framers of the constitution and bill of rights were asked about abortion, homosexuality, gay marriage, and the like what would they say about it? Do you think that those were the things they had in mind? My definition of liberty does include not preventing people from doing things that only effect them and not others. However, it also includes not condoning things that are morally reprehensable and an abomination to our creator. And by accepting things such as legal abortion and gay marriage, is to condone them or normalize those things. Desensitizing society to those things is not the direction we need to go. What we are doing is trying to make good bad and bad good.

Isaiah 5:20--"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!"
