I hear that about getting dark early. Your right it Sucks! Nothing like coming home after the grind, only to have to get stuff done in the dark having your neighbors think your short a few cards of a deck or stuck trying to get everything done in 2 days over the weekends.
I have to be even more proactive about winter. I work on a ship so my job is not in NY and I left just after Halloween and wont be back until Dec 22. SO before I left I topped off the fuel oil (no fireplace or woodstove dang nabbit) I changed the oil in all the cars, but all the patio chairs away, cleaned the porch off, got all the leaves mulched, mowed for the last time, removed the mower deck and installed the plow on the tractor, also put in a small garbage pail of salt for the walkway on the front porch. Tested my sump pump.
I have to do all these things because if my wife hast to call a specialist it costs $100 to ring the front door bell! then the hourly rate jumps if it is late or a weekend, forget holiday rates.
I am sure I missed some key weatherization preparation part but I figure I will get the big ones first.
My advantage to my work is that when I am home i am home all day and night until I have to leave. the problem with that is it creates apathy and allows me to procrastinate too many projects so I end up running like a madman the last few days home.
Enjoy! I am in San Diego now and frankly it is a bit chilly out here, need a coupla shirts and a jacket for morning or evening attire.
LOL! I got a little chuckle out of some of this. Some of you guys really stockpile food and gasoline for the winter? I've never known anyone living in a metropolitan area to do this. Not saying it's good or bad - just not sure why I guess. I always knew it happened just never met any of them.

What part of Webster are you in? You may be in for a surprise - Parts of Webster gets NAILED by lake effect snow bands. I think you're confusing I-90 with RT104. The "104 Corridor" is always talked about in the weather around Rochester. Winter is funny in this area - you could have blue skys over your house and a mile down the road is getting 2"'s an hour! Makes driving fun!!!!

I keep a fair amount of gas for my gen and then use it all summer for mowing etc.. I'm just being prepared in advance for the summer..

I'm right on the lake, next to Webster park.. With this last little bit of snow I noticed that the area just North of Klem Rd (1/2 way between the lake and 104) had considerably more snow than we did on the lake. It's a few degrees warmer right on the lake this time of year so we get a bit more rain on those warmer snows. This is our first winter here and we are hoping for lots of snow. It's hard to interpret the locals when it comes to snow amounts, "not a lot" compared to the hard core areas can still be a ton of snow.

The area by me is all bedroom communities, lots of folks driving into the city areas of NYC, White Plains, etc.. Many of them have moved from the cities not long ago and don't really think about "what if". As soon as a flake of snow falls they either run off the road or all run to the store and buy everything off the shevles in a panic and close the schools for three days.
I can't stand folks that are clueless for when the "stuff" hits the fan. Get to see many of these folks being involved with my local fire company. Sometimes we see the same people time and time again. You'd think they would learn from these events. Nope, "someone will help me out" is their thought. And it's not that I don't like to help people out, I would not be a volunteer firefighter if that was the case. Sometimes you are dealt a bad hand and need help getting out of the frying pan, that's fine and that's what emergencies are. But if you've lived someplace for a couple of years you'd think they'd have a clue that "this area is prone to flood the road or that I should have some candles for when the power goes out".
I am so ready. I love driving in the snow, and the more the better (less drivers to worry about). I even enjoy plowing, and that is on a '64 wheelhorse the leaks oil and has a plow just wider than my shovel. There is a lot of manual work involved in that thing.
I don't like how short the days are, but I do love this time of the year. Christmas is coming around, folks are happy and cheery, and school is ending. We aren't really all that well prepared. We have enough food to survive for a little while, a full oil tank before any snow hits, chainsaws, a generator to borrow when needed, and the Jeep will get us anywhere, even in a state of emergency.

I so agree with ya about the short days. As to snow removal I'm just about in the same boat here. My snow blower blew it's engine the end of last season. I bought a replacement engine, but have not installed it yet. The plow truck could use a good tune up, but it's a plow truck with no tags so it will get the plugs either cleaned or swapped and I'll call it a day.
Pretty much enough stuff here to be fine for awhile. And like ya said, I can always take the Jeep to get me somewhere
