It took me about 5 years to try and duplicate the wonderful sauce made by Flint's BBQ in Oakland after we moved up here from the Bay area. i read a few weeks ago that they have gone out of business. The elderly owner died and no one else had the sauce recipe. They kept trying but people just didn't like it as they did the original. Mine's in my head too, but I have given it to my son. My wife went on business to Kansas City and brought back a couple of bottles of different ones, but I have yet to taste anything bottled that's very good.
Some of the easiest sauces I do are basically a little sugar, ketchup and/or mustard, vinegar, and some crushed red pepper and/or Frank's Red Hot. I put this onto the stove and get it up to a boil while constantly stirring. I only let it go a few minutes and take it off the heat then put it onto the Q. I do it to taste so there's no real recipes but it is a great starting point for a great "house" sauce.
I have a great sauce that is in between, not too vinegar or sweet etc. If any one is interested I will give you the ingrediants.
Here comes my question...I have been marinating the Boston Butt in the sauce for 5 days to a week and have been happy with the result but has anyone ever used one of those injectors and pumped the sauce in to the meat before smoking ???
I have asked a lot of old timers ( that do a larger quanity) around here and no one has tried it.
