Places to camp in the mountains

What are some good places to camp in a tent in NC? I'm from Ohio so I think it would be cool to camp in the mountains for a change.

What kind of camping are you looking for, car camping or hiking to camp?

My favorite camping spot is in Panthertown Valley. We hiked a couple miles and camped near a waterfall. We took precations as it is supposed to be a bear sanctuary but we don't recall seeing a squirrel or bird let alone any bears. I guess the bear bells, food bags, and such did the trick.

Crowders / Kings Mountain is really close near Gastonia on the NC/SC border. The 20min hike is fairly easy and sites have designated camping pads, fire rings, grill, and lantern post. I think it is $5-$7 a night?

The sites are close enough to one another that you can see the neighbors' sites on either side but they also have free split firewood which is always a plus, a water pump, and an outhouse.

The hike to king's pinnacle is nice and on a clear day you can see the Charlotte skyline.
