IMO any method we use for power generation will impact the environment in a big way,its just an unfortunate consequence of mans need for power.

IMHO, too many are so concerned with "environment change" that they go into a variety of Green activities without thinking abut the overall impact.
As an example - ethanol and other biomass fuels. They require sources that are often important part of the food change - for humans and animals. With those sources converted into fuels, it causes shortages which are reflected in food shortages and higher prices. They generally don't affect developed nations but leave the poor and underpriveleged in a real bind,
Acres and acres of solar panels, even in the desert, have a serious impact on the local environment - making changes that we don't understand the overall shock of. Birds killed by the focused solar rays are but one part of that understood result.
My point is simply that drilling and refining petroleum products has never produced this kind of results.
