Halloween costume ideas needed

My mother had kept one of my 1970s school dance dresses (have no clue why). I wore it years later with one of those medieval conical caps with the netting hanging off the top point, so I could be a princess at a party.
Thankfully, no photos were taken at this party.

I have two suggestions on where to find costumes that you might not otherwise consider:
1. Renaissance fairs.
2. US Civil War re-enactments. I know that some of the women who participate in these just buy used frilly prom dresses and wear a hoop underneath them.
