The third picture looks like the normal house in Southern California, and doesn't seem over the top to me.

This is a planned community (W/HOA) and that is just the location of the mailbox post for the surrounding residences. A lot of these places are all house and no yard, you can hear your neighbor in his bathroom!

Most, if not all, are behind 24 hour armed, guarded gates, to protect the celebrities and muckety mucks who live there. I've seen that home on the beach quite a few times while boating in the Pacific.
