MOUNT HOOD, Ore. ? A serious traffic crash near Mount Hood Meadows shut down Highway 35 Saturday afternoon.
Oregon State Police sergeant Pat Shortt said 22-year-old Drew Smith from University Place, Wash. was driving southbound around 4:30 p.m. when he attempted to pass a commercial truck.
As the Jeep was alongside the truck, it collided head-on with a Chevy Suburban driven by 26-year-old Scott Veenis from Park City, Utah.
Sgt. Shortt said Smith was trying to pass just before a blind curve in the highway.
There were seven people in the Suburban. Veenis and 15-year-old passenger James Shipman were taken by medical helicopter to hospitals in Portland.
All five other passengers were between 15 and 18 years old. They were taken to a hospital in Hood River and were all released.
Drew Smith was also treated and released in Hood River. His passenger, 16-year-old Evan Smith was being treated in an intensive care unit at the same hospital.
