Let's talk "camping" - Have you or are you Camping - by RV or other means?

Let's talk "camping" - Have you or are you Camping - by RV or other means?

Here's my ~~~~~

I began my actual RV'ing while I had a pickup truck with a bed cover (of course I did "tent camping" in the Boy Scouts, etc.)....I created a sleeping platform from a sheet of plywood and 2 x 4's (for framing) to which I added a 4' foam mattress...by raising it to the height of the truck bed railing, it fit over the wheelwell and allowed enough room to walk beside. I made it 6.5' in length, which left enough room(truck bed length was 8') for a large "cooler" at the end and since it was raised, it left enough room to slide my fishing poles, etc. underneath. We drove this to a campground at the beach and spent a great weekend.......here we caught the "camping bug"... When we got home and I was telling a friend at work about it, and he said he had a "pop-up" camper he would sell me.......so, purchased this and went to the beach for a week on the next trip.....later saw an eighteen foot travel trailer, which was our next purchase.....from here to a 29' travel trailer and ultimately to a 39' motorhome. This was all done near my retirement age (should have done it sooner) and after retirement, stored our furniture and began traveling around the US. Found this to be a great life until wife decided she wanted a place "to come back to"....

The way to accomplish extended travel is to purchase a Campground Membership. This allows for traveling all year on only the dues to the Membership Gampground. We owned two memberships, Thousand Trails and Outdoor World. Thousand Trails have campgrounds all over the US and you just travel from one to the other. Outdoor World has them on the East Coast from Maine to Florida. Since you can only stay for fourteen days, at any one time, the second membership allowed for travel between them. Of course you can travel from one to another without the limitation for the required "out time". The campgrounds always have great activities for the members....swimming pools, dances, card playing, and many others! There is never a dull moment.

You can check these websites, although there are other memberships in various areas of the Country, to view what they have to offer.

AND, a valuable tip to consider if you decide to purchase a campground membership! I was also caught up in this.....folks selling these memberships have various reasons for doing so....primarily they have sold the RV and are no longer camping.......BUT, are still obligated to pay the annual "DUES"....to keep the membership entails an expence to them and many of these folks will just "GIVE" you the membership so they can get rid of the cost of the dues...there will be a 'TRANSFER FEE' from the membership campground, which you may be obligated to pay, but usually after this is paid, your costs will then be the annual dues......a small amount if you are continuously on the road...

This has been some of my experiences........go ahead and share yours!

While traveling down the highway with an RV, you'll probably want to keep in mind a few items....these are just a few things, for your information, I have experienced while traveling with my various RV's.....lots of folks don't give any particular thought to what is actually involved.......DRIVE SAFE.......

1. Where am I traveling to today.
2. Will I be able to get into this campground.
3. When do they close the gates or stop registering for sites.
4. Will I be able to make it to the campground.
5. Will I be able to get my "rig" into this camper space.
6. Does it have the necessary hookups available for my stay.
Ie; Electric Power, Water, Sewer, telephone, cable for TV, etc.
7. Will I be able to stay here as long as I want.
8. What "sightseeing" oppportunities are available.
9. Are there any fine "dining" close by or will I have to travel a great distance to find it.
10. What recreational facilities does this campground have.
Ie; Pool tables, mini-golf, tennis, swimming pools, etc.
11. Does this facility have any entertainment planned for the guests.
Ie; Dancing, card playing, pot-luck dinners, dance lessons,
guest bands for enjoyment or dancing, etc.

This listing is definitely not all inclusive, but just a few items for thought as you travel or plan to travel. And, a "rule-of-thumb", when you are traveling, and you'll notice this happening, most RVers will be off the highway or planning to get off at around 3:00 p.m. (1500hrs. for us military types). This will allow for traveling to the campground from the highway, registering and getting on your site before it gets dark. You may think you can stop overnight at some of the "rest-stops", but this definitely IS NOT ALLOWED. You will find a lot of folks stopping at "shopping center" parking lots, as "Wal-marts", but be aware you should get their permission if you do so or you might find the police asking you to leave and at a very inopportune time for you (this is for folks that plan to spend the night there).

You'll notice in my original "essay" above that the last couple links show Coast to Coast and Resort Parks International memberships.
These are memberships that can be purchased in conjunction with one of the membership parks memberships. You have to purchase them at the park and they are available for those who intend to stay on the road for extended periods. They were designed to provide discounted fees for other "companion parks" that you may want to visit in an area where they don't have your membership park. Kinda' an along the route stopover place.

And, for you who only travel and camp occasionally, I have provided a few information links below...it is invaluable to have some of the included items for your travel.

The Good Sam's Club, KOA (Campgrounds of America) and various directories, such as Trailer Life Campground Directory and Woodall's Campground Directory are great information to have when traveling as they give the names and locations of the various campgrounds. Good Sam's and KOA offer memberships which provide discounted fees for camping at their affiliated parks.....KOA has their own parks and Good Sam discounts are recognized by various other parks, listed in their directory. You can peruse the links for their particular information.

And, as an afterthought, I wouldn't be caught on the highway without my Rand McNally Road Atlas, .........This is a large book of maps for each state, for you who aren't familiar with it, and you can see the "big picture" for your travels.....it also shows, on the maps, the various historic and scenic sites along the highways.....I have missed a lot of areas I would like to have visited by not consulting this information before the day's travels......if you like to travel by "GPS", then the co-ordinates are listed in this new volume...worth your taking a quick look......

Wow! What an informative thread you have compiled TBE!

TbT My wife (well mostly me as she already has) and I have recently discovered the tranquility of getting away and camping. My (first trip in a looooong) time was a tent trip to Cherrystone. Her friends just recently picked up a travel trailer (and that is nice)

However, MY camping preferences lie somewhere inbetween (and this is the coolest thing IMO)

Check out : The Rooftop Tent

There are LOTS of manufacturers (and styles) so one should do their research before making the commitment to buy one of these to determine which one is best (and best for your needs). But the wife and I are sold on a Tepui tent.

I cant wait to get one!!

Still backpack. Rarely do public campgrounds or car/truck camping. Do the Pacific Crest trail around Tahoe and Mammoth and sometimes in between here in the Sierras. Self contained for up to 7 days with 50 to 55 lb. backpack. I like fly fishing the little high altitude lakes and streams.

Thanks for your nice response......I'm afraid, at my age, setting up and then trying to climb into your "rig" might be a bit much........I prefer to stay at ground level.......my pref. for right now, with infrequent trips, might be the Class B......that way you wouldn't need the "tow vehicle", etc....one would do it all......
Here's links you may want to peruse for the various campers like yours..
