Do you guys name your cars?

I have a few friends with Jeeps and we have all named ours based off of the model desigation. Mine is an XJ so it became Xavier Johnson. The two TJ's in our group became Ted and Thaddeus Johnson, and the former SJ (Failed to make it out alive from a botched conversion) became Steve Johnson.

Does anyone else name their cars? And how did you come up with the name?

HiHood 01-07-2012 05:30 PM

I named my Willys "B". Shes a CJ3B.

I also used to have a '54 Chev Bel Air hardtop named "sweetheart"

and I have a truck now called "precious" because my son & grandson started calling it that. They say I freak out when someone gets near my "precious" little truck so that's what we call it now.

I call my work truck P.I.T.A.

bisjoe 01-07-2012 06:39 PM

After having probably 30 cars over the years I have never named one until the latest, a 1997 Escort 5 speed beater that I use to drive to the park & ride to catch the bus to work. For some reason it's fun to zip around in it compared to our SUV and truck, so I call it Zippy.

LOL, use to have a dog with the same name.

I name every one of my cars, just based on what type of personality I feel that they have. My old CJ (350, 67 frame, 74 tub, 76 front clip, a real frankenstein!) was named Bertha. I knew she was going to be a Bertha the first time I drove her - she was old, misshapen, loud, and angry.

I've got just shy of 20 Jeeps, and every one has had a different name/personality. I name my commuters, too. My current main car, a 2012 Honda Fit, is named Lucy :)

I think naming a car is an integral part of really forming a bond with the vehicle and getting to know her. I'm a firm believer, though, that a car should always have a personality of the opposite sex. For me, they're always females. Not sure why, but it just always seems to work out better!

You guys all probably think I'm crazy now haha

If you name you cars/ jeeps does that mean you refer to your wives/ girlfriends as Chrysler or Willys? Just asking. :justkidding:

RiponredTJ 01-12-2012 08:06 AM

I called my Jeep some choice names the other day when it woouldn't start.

jmmorgan82 01-12-2012 02:38 PM

I don't have a set name for the YJ. She usually just gets called whatever explicative comes out of my mouth at the time.

Depends on how much frontend work she's had done.

I call my '86 Bronco Woody.

ElKabong 01-14-2012 12:40 AM

Most of the time here it's more of a description. The 99 superduty crewcab is the big truck. The 90 Bronco is the little truck. So far the 73 Bronco is just the early Bronco, but it seems to want a name. I'm leaning toward naming it Morgan for a few reasons:
1- We have a friend named Morgan who is little & loud. The 73 is also little & loud. The similarity is kinda funny.
2- The whole Bronco horse/Morgan horse thing. A Morgan horse is described as compact & strong, & that fits too.
3- Is an inside joke & won't mean anything to most people. It is an early bronco, & if anyone anywhere still knows about Big Dog, they'll understand why something called Early should also be named Morgan.

My circle of friends growing up would name their cars after their girlfriend's mother. I had a girlfriend whose mom was named Sam, so I tried that on a 68 Cougar, but it didn't stick. The oddest one of those was a 64 Falcon named Agatha.

I have always named my vehicles, Thetimotin . . . doesn't everyone?

My '86 Jeep CJ-7 is BUMMER and my '05 Chevy SSR is DOOPHUS. They "answer" to their names and have License Plates to match.

Sorry but the story behind each name is much too long to type here.

Austin 01-17-2012 03:10 PM

I'm calling my new one Car.

Not very original, but I have to stop calling it the Jeep when I tell everyone to pile in.

Too long to type? Physically, that's not really possible. Well, I guess it could be, but it'd have to be an entire lifetime. But I am a fast typer, so I'd even take that one on.

My 2012 Honda Fit's name is Lucy!

I just got an Xterra and am looking for a name for her. I am thinking an Israeli name would work. Simply because she is tough and beautiful.

RiponredTJ 10-16-2012 05:40 PM

Drive it for a while. Something will come to you.

skippercollector 04-24-2014 08:53 PM

a friend's name

I never have, but a friend named her silver car "Pearl Dove."
