Looking for some trails for the Jeep
Im looking for some place to take the Jeep. I live between Madison and lacrosse. It would be sweet to have a BBQ camp and trail ride trip.
I would also be interested in finding a few more of these super secretive locations.... Im in Lake Geneva area and all i know of are the Badlands in IL and the Cliffs near IN
hey cjjon7 -- I am in Delavan and there are not any public spots to wheel very close, but I am always on the lookout for spots.
The south east parts of the states seems to be the only places with ORV parks. Im from the northwest my only options are the Gandydancer trail north of Danbury and the Crex Meadows (not quite sure if thats legal).
Actually, most of the public places are in northern or NW WI (there are a couple in NE MN too) I don't know of much in between La Crosse and Madison.
There is Mcaslin (sp) Apple Valley, Nicolet Ntl Forest has some logging roads, etc. If you go to LOST JEEPS, there is a post in the Midwest section that has a bunch of them listed. Otherwise, yes, check out WOHVA too. FYI I'm in Madison, so if you do find some closer to "home" let me know :) |
yikes ive heard of a guy who just built a decent spot on his land in East Troy and will let people come out for 20 bucks a day...ill look more into it and let you know.
Definitely looking for a place to wheel myself other than on my own land.
Have you tried any of the forest roads in northen Wis and the U.P.? Not real technical but a good chance to get dirty, with resorts , motels, campgrounds and food readly available.

I thought I heard Mcaslin Mt was open by special event/ party only still. For examplpe, getting a group of people together (or a club) for a ride?
From the MM homepage: "McCaslin Mountain Campground offers direct access to local ATV trails in Oconto County, however, the ATV and 4-Wheel Drive Trails on the mountain behind the campground have been closed permanently of May 1st, 2010."
I didn't know it was closed and there isn't an explanation on the website. It was always a fun, low-key, uncrowded place to camp and wheel for a weekend. |
McCaslin was always sketchy. Never really knew exactly who's land I was on or if the camp ground had any right to charge for access. It is pretty technical terrain, but the constant basketball sized boulders are annoying for leaf sprung YJs.
That said, I much prefer the pipeline outside of Crivitz. The variety of terrain offers a multitude of challenges and fun, and more importantly, the trails run North-South, so there is no confusion as to where you are! Anywho, those are the two areas I am most familiar with up here in NE Wisconsin. |
Yeah, there's not much that I'm aware of up in northern WI, Just alot of back woods logging roads. Not much for legal ORV parks though.
Our family alyays heads to the pipe line just west of crivitz lots of fun for the family, but there has been alot of dnr this past year
The DNR is flexing its muscle in Wisconsin and needs to be stopped!! I work at a Bike shop in Viroqua and I have seen first hand the dnr's ignorance and stupidity
Try The Pipeline in Crivitz
DNR has to much power. Wohoo a drip of oil on the ground is gonna kill a few insects ! .

^^^ prepare for the worst and hope for the best is about all you can do in any situation in life.
Anytime the government is involved you can bet on the former... |
Not a lotta wheelin in these parts unless you know private land owners. Joining a club might be your best bet. I'm not part of one, but have been in the past. Just not enough time on my part to be a joiner...
Check out the Legendary Civilian Jeepers: Legendary Civilian Jeepers Good bunch of guys over there. Or the Weekend Wheelers out of Viroqua/Westby...you can PM me and I'll give you a contact email if you'd like. I hit Gilbert, MN once a year, CO and Moab...bout the best you're gonna find, going elsewhere. Good luck, B |
Man, I don't know how many thread I have read on this topic, always dissapointed. Any hews on that east troy location?
I'm also very interested to hear about the East Troy spot. It's only half the distance for me it is to get to Crivitz.
Ill get back to you guys on the East Troy deal...never did get the chance to get out there myself yet but I know of a guy who said he was so ill get in touch with him and get the scoop..hold tight

there are a couple of public events on private land that i go to..
Dresser and Apple Valley Farms are really good places to wheel. |
Unfortunately I found out that the East Troy location was pretty nice and in operation for about a month and was shut down by local authorities.... Didnt think they had much of a pull over private property but who the heck knows i guess anything flies these days.. The search continues..
That is terrible! Seriously though, Private land? What the heck?!
Anywhere you guys no of between greenbay and milwaukee area with access?
After 8 years of the no new taxes governor of Minnesota, many of the roads in the Twin Cities are more off road than some trails I know from Moab! :cheers2:

Want better roads? Tell washington to get the heck out of the states pocket book so that the state can stay the heck out of mine. The problem is something FAR above Mr No Tax, or any governor for that matter. :ontopic: As for East Troy... any details on what the reason was for it being shut down? |
