El Dorado National Forest Camping

Hey All,

I've lived here a few years and have yet to take advantage of the awesome NF that that is so close. So this next spring/summer I want to plan a camping trip. Where are the better spots, and would I need reservations? Looking for camping, fishing, and if available maybe a little shooting.

There is a bunch of camping up north of Hwy 50. Ice House road has Union Valley, Hell Hole, French Meadows and the Rubicon area. Hundreds of camp sites.

I spend many a vacation in that area, Union Valley but better yet Wright's Lake.

Was there this past summer, and the road was still closed in late June due to snow. Lots of fat rainbows in the lake and creek, but the water is so clear they are hard to catch.

I did some snow camping at union valley reservoir last March. There was another group camping near by us and it sounded like world war 3. It's good to know there aren't just hippies in CA.

I love the Union Valley area for the family trips. Rubicon area is much more suited for a manly crowd.

Yes unless it's posted. Private property is owners discretion. Desolation wilderness is off limits tho.

Ice house has some good camping. Spots are pretty spacious and the lake is a few steps away. Good for family fun.

You should get a Forest Service Map. It will show you where all the forest roads are and where they go. These are not paved roads for the most part but you can travel them with a car. Just use a little common sense when the road gets rough, turn around. I love California's Natl. Forests.
