Good beer?

Any local brewpubs worth trying? Engine 15 in Jax Beach has a good selection of guest taps while they're trying to get their brewhouse fired. The Alehouses at least carry a reasonable selection, although about the only thing approaching a good ale is Sierra Nevada.

Don't get me wrong - Sierra Nevada is good and has gotten me through some dry spells in desolate places that generally only server fizzy yellow piss water (aka Bud, Miller, Coors).

Has Jacksonville not discovered the microbrewery revolution?

rupintart 11-19-2010 11:31 AM

Not a Microbrew, but over 600 different bottled beers and 84 beers on tap. Open till 3am....it's a win win. Kickbacks Gastro pub

Sierra Nevada on tap and medium Zingers make the Alehouses a worthwhile stop almost anywhere. But after getting into craft beers, microbrews, and some really good imports, most bars, including the Alehouse, have lost their initial luster.

I was just in Jax Beach for a weekend a few months ago and, after searching from bar to bar, I found only one place that carried DogfishHead... and that was it. No, FL has not discovered Micro/Craft beer yet. I lived in Gainesville for 20 years, and I can say, it's a culture thing. Crappy, light, cheap, beer is most people want... so that's what most bars carry. Pretty sad if you ask me.

Bold City Brewery in Riverside / Westside of Jacksonville will give you a sampling of their delicious beers.

European street has a decent selection.

Kickbacks is probably the best yet for variety. Great food too.

Mellow Mushroom in Jax beach actually has quite a few on tap too.

I too have found the Ale House. Great selection of beer on tap, always love a Smithwicks or Guinness.

I went to PF Changs at the Town Center last week and they had four beers on tap and they were all crap.

+1 for Bold City. They're getting better

+1 again for Bold City and Kickbacks, also Intuition Ale Works 720 King Street looks interesting, haven't been there yet though.

I agree, it's tough to find good beer in Jax. The masses don't care about quality, but rather they want cheap watered down "floor beer" to go with their "whatever-bombs".

Seven Bridges is one of my favorite micro brews in Jax. I like the chill atmosphere, the brews are pretty good and the service is usually great. A good friend of mine (actually one of my groomsmen) was the brew master there a number of years ago. I still drop by every once in a while and still like that place. Go to the bar and ask for Steve. Tell him Keith sent you!

I went up to E-Street last night on Park and they had the Intuition People's Pale which was pretty good, makes me want to try their other brews.

alapapa 12-19-2010 02:24 PM

Brix in Jax Beach has a pretty good selection. Go early. It fills w/ D-bags ~ 9pm on the weekends.

Kickbacks has the best selection

Mellow Mushroom has some good stuff

Speckled Hen is supposed to have a good selection, but I've not been there - Speckled Hen Tavern & Grille

another vote for Kickbacks. Bold City has the best local beer in my opinion. they sell beer in growlers for pretty cheap too if you are trying to get good bear on a dime.

I found some Stone Brewery's "Arogant Bastard" on tap in Orlando last month. It was really good. Has anyone seen in on tap here in the Jax area?

steelersrbrun 12-20-2010 08:25 PM

I don't know of anything close....Palm Bay has some great option.. .if oyu like Belgians you should get a room for the event.... Coasters Pub -- A1A & Eau Gallie, Melbourne FL
Plus you have GA right by you....In south FL it take HOURS to get close to good stuff like that.

banjo 12-21-2010 10:39 AM

Pretty sure Ki,kbacks had Arrogant Bastard on tap, they also do some awesome beer diners every month or two focusing on one breweries selection.

BandungBaby 12-27-2010 09:16 AM

St. Augustine

Just drive a few minutes south on A1A, nice drive, and you'll run into A1A Alehouse right in the middle of St. Augustine. They have a nice red ale; the restaurant is part of a chain of restaurants, different names, that serve the microbrews they make.

Also, in Atlantic/Neptune Beach area is Rag Time, owned by the same people as above and they always have interesting new beers, seasonal, etc.

fishaspey 12-28-2010 02:08 PM

My favorites are Bold City and Engine 15.. Enigine 15 has goes through Bells IPA aboiut every two weeks. So the kegs are fresh and hoppy.. worth the $5 pint. A newer brewery Intuition is up and coming but nothing to write home about yet anyway. the pale ale is decent. He needs to treat the city water or be confined to hoppy beers.

g8rjoe 12-29-2010 02:33 PM

+1 for kickbacks and Bold City along with Intuition. Brewers in Orange park also has a nice selection.

portcityXJ 01-12-2011 07:58 PM

Another vote for kickbacks and bold city. wish we had something similar in SE Georgia.

aallison28 01-16-2011 04:49 PM

Bold City Brewerey is good. We had the micro brewerys but they just didn't make it.

isaac2264 01-26-2011 09:21 AM

A1A aleworks

1 King Street
St. Augustine, FL 32084
phone: 904-829-2977

They make some tasty beers in the brewery in the back of the restaurant. Worth a visit.

rdping 02-14-2011 03:16 PM

In addition to BCB there is another microbrewery around the corner... but I like BCB best. On Thursday / Friday / Saturday they have a caterer come in and grill some of the best burgers or chicken you can ask for (+it's cheap)!!
