If you're looking for food in general, not just BBQ then have you been to Abbey road grill in Cary?? It's a small little dive place that was once a gas station. They have some of the best burgers i've had in the triangle. As for BBQ i've only had the q at ole timers in Cary/Raleigh. I'd much rather pull it off of my own smoker. ;-)

Duncan Junction has the best ribeye steak sandwich you'll ever eat. It's located inside a gas station on Hwy 42W, just outside Fuquay. I think the real name is Rebecca's Grill, but I've never known anyone to call it that. It's alway been referred to as Duncan Junction. It is truly a hole-in-the-wall, greasy-spoon type establishment, and it is fantastic.

Not a "hole in the wall" but Characters Quarters in Garner has the best food in the South Raleigh/Garner/Clayton area and is way under rated. Come on Saturday night for great live bands! The ribs are awesome. It is only 7 -8 minutes from glennwood south and all the food is fresh not frozen like chains. Great place!

The best BBQ in that area is Stephensons on Hwy 50 in Benson, I'm pretty sure they cook over wood. It is really old and family run. Great place to eat. I think the last time I went there they didn't do credit cards but would still take checks. Might be different now.
They were the #2 in the state several years ago.
I just did a search and Parkers in Wilson is ranked best in the state for 2010.

I have eaten there before and it is great BBQ but kind of a haul from Raleigh.

Joyce's in Fuquay. Don't expect some fancy
place, but they have the best fried chicken
under the sun!

I'll second that. It's a buffet with nothing but good, country home cookin' (like Grandma used to make).
