Seriously...I began to hear the reference in the late 1960's and it seems to stand alone. Never any explanation...just a reference and then nothing.

There are people who enjoy reading that their favored team won last night, and watch them if they happen to be on, or they make it to the playoffs. These are your typical Easter/Christmas Christians.

There are people who really enjoy watching their team. They will schedule their lives around their team, forgoing other activities, time with their family, (personal hygiene?) in favor of watching the game. These are "Jesus Freaks"

There are people who paint their faces in their team's colors. Half their wardrobe is in the team colors. You can tell their team affiliation by looking at their car, desk, coffee cup, ear rings... These are "Stereotypical Jesus Freaks".

There are people who sit in a stadium in -10F weather, wearing nothing above the waist but a layer of body paint and perhaps a mask. These people are "Idiots".

Druggies who SEE GOD in their chemical trips and become religious druggies instead of regular ones, who feel the need to correct others in their "evil ways" , while totally and completely neglecting the verse that refers to taking the BEAM out of ones' own eye prior to helping their neighbor pluck the sliver out of theirs called out by their supposed leader Jesus Christ himself.
