Grow Hops?

Anyone growing hops for home brew beer? If so what variety, how many years, what's your typical yeild per plant?

I tried 5 rhizomes last spring, two took the other 3 didn't grow. The 2 that grew were Whillamette. They only got about 2 feet tall, but we had a very mild summer.

The problem with growing your own hops is that the hop plant takes a lot of room with all of the vines and wants lots of sun so you have to have just the right area to grow them.

It takes a few years for a plant to be productive. They need lots of warmth, but also a good soak and slight dryout. As Starrbrew said, HBT has lots of good info as does morebeer and freshops.

I've got Cascade, Willamette, Golding, Magnum, Centennial growing on a south facing wall. They LOVE it.

Have any of you tried growing Hallertauer or other German varieties? I am really interested in trying to grow German varieties here. I wonder if my neighbors would complain about a wall of hops separating our houses.

I tried to grow hops in El Centro last year but it did not go too well. I think it is too hot down here.
