best places to eat (local only)

Alright.. I wanna know what secrets you guys know that I don't.. so I'm talking local (no chains) restaurants that offer reasonably priced food that is really good.. Let's hear what everybody thinks.

Italian Garden - not exactly the cheapest, but very tasty
El Charro - (my favorite)
Rivendell - high points for uniqueness
The cajun place on san antonio st.. can't remember the name right now but it's good..

where else?

Secret spots w/ secret sauce

Cajun Mommas....that's the cajun food place and Actually my monther in law is the manager and if you know or know of Furley..he is the one of the head cooks there and a damn good one I might add....
Here are some goodies I know of....

Skull Creek BBQ---it's in the middle of that row of cedar buildings at the Juction..Great Brisket and really original BBQ Sauce. Cheap also...Cold Beers

Poppas Place ---On Hwy 80 about half way between SM and Martindale, in that row of red metal buildings, it used to be Lugo's Imports.. Great nonsysco burgers and such, awsome lunch specials, best onion rings in San Marcos...i think they have beers.

Breakfast Tacos from the Kettle---ya I know it don't sound right, but I can assure you these tacos are great..I just happend to need Breakfast tacos and was working down the street so I went there and got some for the hell of it....they where really good and big..

what's up with that god damn BBQ place next to TC...How long have they been working on that place? At first it was funny 'cause it took them forever just to frame the building in, but now it's just sad....

I can't think of any more .....

"wana lil hunk a meat? C'mon Key Key, get a lil shoolsberry stoofer, muahallaglalgalgllg.....He likes it crag....."

Cajun Mommas

Cajun Mommas closed down, really sad because it was an awesome true authentic cajun food.

Um, the diamond shamrock on corner of bishop and hopkins has some great, chips and sodas.

Um, Jive turkey is also real nice just opened up, big huge beefy burgers, or turkey burgers, and fried twinkies.

Um, wal-mart has everything tho...

Rojelio's Mexican Food - like Herberts used to be...cept better. (behind AutoZone on Guadalupe)

Herberts - cause it's Herberts and has the best velvet painting of Christ weeping over earth while a satellite hovers near his crown....

El Charro - It's just dang good.

Kismet Cafe - really decent chicken quesidillas.

Grins - great mushroom & swiss burgers

Janies Gordita's - off Hwy.80 on your way to Martindale...very goooood gorditas.

Cafe On the Square - Breakfast Burrito....huge thing...plate sized...good god....hangover heaven.

Susie's Kitchen - back where the Mean Bean coffee shop used to be...behind the Italian Gardens in the little shopping center....great handmade sandwiches and decent prices.

Gosh...I think that's it.

none

Went to Jaysons Deli for the first time night before last, and I gotta tell ya this place is great. I saw a special for a half a baked potatoe for 3.99 and thought how can you charge 4 bucks for half a potatoe? Well its because a whole potatoe is the size of a football...no ****.....these things are big.

So that's my new favorite place to eat....

Yah jaysons deli is cool, very nutrional options for side orders, and plentiful salad bar. I had the "ranger" sandwich that was awesome w/ a side of potato salad. I've also had the garden sandwich...i think. Its the sandwich that has not meat and uses veggies...that was really filling.

Not too many places locally to eat..but some pretty reasonable cajun food in austin is: Genes Restraunt. on east 11th street. it's a shanty but the owners are really nice and the plates are plentiful...

Gene's

Man o man...Gene's is most certainly a home-style legacy. Where cornbread, greens, pork chops, gumbo, green beans, and fried chicken livers are the best around. I love that place.

Grins - stick w/ the burgers and appetizers.

Herberts Taco Hut - my fav is the flour burrito dinner, but its all good

Palmers - san marcos' upscale restaurant. Try the Flautas, awesome.

The Tap Room - beer heaven, and great food.

Cafe on the Square - good food and usually healthy portions.
