Tax raid plucks local restaurant

By David Short Staff Reporter

San Marcos ? Special agents from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts descended on the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on IH-35 South and seized the assets, shutting down the location in the process.

The raid took place just after employees opened the store Tuesday morning.

?They just came in suddenly, took all the money, changed the door locks and told us it was being shut down immediately,? Joe Ramirez, KFC assistant manager said. ?About eight to 10 of them with a van and some criminal investigation officers, saying the owners hadn?t paid taxes.?

According to Ramirez and other employees standing outside, the agents told them the back taxes amount to more than $172,000 for the San Marcos location.

?They also seized three locations in Sequin, New Braunfels and Kerrville at the same time with other teams,? Ramirez said. All four restaurants belonged to the same owner, agents said.

Ramirez, who had been with this store for almost a year, identified the owners as Cindy and Jimmy Meyers. The 2010 San Marcos Chamber of Commerce Guide listed the owner as Cindy Meyers and Associates.

?They have an office in Nacogdoches but live in Kerrville. We haven?t been able to contact them this morning,? Ramirez said.

Thirteen employees at the location are now out of a job, and some like Jacob Gonzales had come by today expecting to pick up paychecks.

?I?ve only been here three months, and now I?ve got to try and find another job quickly,? Gonzales said.

Notices are now posted on the main doors letting potential customers know the store is no longer open.

My daughter use to work at one. After some of her stories, I won't step foot into that place!

I used to manage a Chuch's. I still eat there from time to time, but not the one I worked at.

I used to like to take on problem kitchens and turn them around.

The last place I did that for I told everyone not to eat there till I gave them the go ahead. It took months.

Had to fire half the crew, the other half I had to yell at. It was terrible.

I drove by the San Marcos location at lunch and there was a person sitting in the drive-thru trying to order. Made me laugh just a little bit.
