I live in a little town and there are no service stations left here either. Maybe I should start one!

It's no better in small towns. Gas stations are gas stations, and repair is now 99% done elsewhere.

I am reminded of the scene in 'Dude, Where's My Car' at the Chinese restaurant drive in. 'And then...?'

I too am a bit to young to remember service stations, but have heard from others who have traveled internationally that customer service tends to be an American thing. Too bad that seems to be going away, because there is a TON to be said for personal interaction. Even if it is just over the phone with a 'customer service agent.' I really wonder if they have a script sometimes...

They also gave away free glasses and dishes.
My Grandmother had a complete set of dishes from Mobil.
$1.00 of regular and a quart of bulk oil and we were set for the night.

I remember the gas wars...at one point in 1971 or 72 I recall gas going down to $0.17 a gallon...can you believe it? I paid $3.25 a gallon yesterday...and now one cleaned my windshield or checked the oil!
