Composting

About 120 days ago I emptied my compost bin and put about a yard and ahalf of rich, black compost into the vegetable garden. That was satisfying, but it was a bit discouraging looking at that bin and thinking "man, how long will it take to have compost again?" Well, last weekend I sifted two full garbage cans and a full wheelbarrow of rich, black compost from that bin and I have a new batch started. All from kitchen waste and yard trimmings. It's easy and cheap, and the effect of good, fresh, rich compost teeming with microbes is really fantastic.

Does it smell when it is composting?

If it smells bad, that means it's "gone anaerobic". Turn it and let air get into it and any bad smell will go away. Good, aerobic composting smells like sweet, clean earth.
