I tried to get some of the San Marcos skyline but you can't really see the smoke in them. It's pretty bad though.

Anyone have pics of their area?

They're all scary. The Southwest needs to create some fire breaks in areas with lots of dry brush. This is happening too often to ignore and the climate changes promise much more hot dry weather there.

We have a large fire burning near Sisters in the Willamette Forest. We're due to return to rains soon so I doubt it will be a big problem. Another is burning in the Mt. Hood Wilderness area and could threaten a few communities.

The Sisters fire is just over the cascades but to reach me the smoke must travel North, then West thru the Columbia Gorge and then move South enough to bring the smell of smoke to the valley.

My (pregnant) wife and I live in Steiner Ranch where some of these fires were. We were evacuated for a few days. Luckily we live towards the back of the neighborhood and I never really thought our home was in danger. We evacuated before it was mandatory. For those of you who dont know, Steiner Ranch has over 4500 homes and there is only 2 ways in and out of the neighborhood so leaving took almost 2 hours.

(mute it becasue there is a lot of wind noise) You can't tell from the video and it does not do the fires justice. When we evacuated we had to exit the neighborhood towards the fires. We came up over the hill and it looked like a movie set. There was smoke filling the whole area.

My wife is an orthodontist and they have three offices around Austin including one in Bastrop. A lot of their patients and employees have lost their homes. If you are on Facebook, like her practices 2 Facebook pages. For every 'like' they get from now until October 31st, the practice is donating $5 to help the victims of these fires.

That cries for needing to be changed. The fire in your area looked huge. If high winds, drought and other factors ever combine it could result in a death trap. Look up "trapped by fire" in Google and I think you'll agree. The night of the Chicago Fire a more devastating fire hit Peshtigo Wisconsin. A lot of people simply couldn't escape in time.
