I think a lot of it lso has to do with your political leanings. If you're leftie, Austin and the surrounding areas is great, a righty, any where not Austin, and at least 45 miles from the border.
That's if you want to get long with your neighbors, if not, try to find a town within a reasonable drive to a metro area. I like small town living, but it gets tough when your population is bellow a couple of thousand.
We have everything, culture, fishing, hunting, great food, great tourist sights, everything is relatively close to everything else property costs are low, home values have gone down, but ONLY because of the media, we do not have the housing issues here
