vacation on the coast

Where is the best place to stay for a family vacation on the coast? I have heard good things about the gulf coast, but never been there. any suggestions?

Corpus is nice and South Padre Island is awesome....the further south of Houston is when the water gets better. Its Kinda brown here since the Mississippi dumps in near here.

South Padre Island, it's more or less just families except during the 4th and Spring Break.
