There are several spots along the trail at Shoecreek, and even though everybody has used them for years, technically anything on either side of Shoecreek is private property. The landowners (read: hunters) get real pissed when you are camping on their property especially during hunting season. Since they are talking about closing Shoecreek to the public, best to keep them happy.
There are 2 private campgrounds nearby that come highly recommended. Only things are, Montibello is higher priced and has lots of bears, and no, I'm not kidding about bears. If you're tent camping there, best to keep a fire going all night, and don't keep any food in your tent. Probably better choice to stay at Crab Tree, they have cabins there too, that are reasonably priced if you're going with a bunch of folks.
Montabello Campground (540-377-2650), up near the TOP of R.t 56 very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. They have a website AND they are on Facebook:

Then, there is the Crabtree Falls Campground (540) 377-2066 I understand that they are kind of hard to get ahold of by phone, just keep trying, they'll answer eventually); this is on the left side, along Rt. 56, as you are heading up to the top entrance (although most folks use this as the exit) to Shoe Creek, and ascending the mountain.

Hope this helps.
Be well,
