West Virginia is actually a great state. People underestimate it and I hate when people say it's full of Rednecks, because it's not (although that depends on what part of the state you go to)
Both of my parents are from Parkersburg and we make a yearly trip to visit family still in Parkersburg. Parkersburg is a great area, it has a wide variety of people. It's town varies in living standards. You may be in the slumps 1 minute, make a right turn and you see a development of houses $500,000+.
Blennerhasset Island is a great place to visit too. It's located on the Ohio River, about 15 miles from Parkersburg.
While driving through Charleston, we always stop at an attraction called "Tamarak"
It's a great place to rest after a long drive, look at some cool things, and get some really good food.
"TAMARAK" is a large assortment of West Virginia Crafts and is located at Exit 45 off of Interstate 77/64 and about 50 miles South of Charleston at Beckley, WV. Also, located there is a rest stop type location with gasoline, food, etc.
It is simple the best reason to come check out WV, is the abundant trees and mountainous terrain, our war history, but lets not forget the MOTH MAN!
Not to mention all the good camping. Lets face it I don't think many of the cities are worth checking out. But the woodland areas are great. So give it some thought, and if you don't like mountains, war, monsters, or out doors then just stay out of our state lol Just joking.
I would like to plan a tour of the U.S.A.
Would you help me decide where to go by giving us one good reason to visit your State.
Here's an example of West Virginia's splendor, the world famous resort hotel "THE GREENBRIER", nestled in the mountains at White Sulphur Springs, WV. And, the sulphur spring from which it derived it's name and, one of it's golf courses built from the "ground up" on the Hotel's abandoned airport.
Here are some fun videos of the various programs on the "New River Gorge Canyon" and the various facilities available from this one vendor.....it does show the New River Gorge Bridge, the White Water Rafting, Zip Lining and other views of the mountains.
-music (check out a Mountain Stage performance sometime, or check out the stuff going on at the Clay Center)
-great food and beer (see related threads here!)
