The Dorchester Academy is a very significant historic site in the country. It has played a huge role in educating African-Americans, and pushed for equality in the best way possible since its inception in the 1800s. It served as a school, primarily for freed men back when slavery was still legal, and continued to be a place for learning when the government started allowing African-Americans to vote.
However, due to the lack of maintenance and governing body to take care of the site, the Dorchester Academy is now one of the 11 historic sites that are endangered. What remains from the original campus is the boys? dormitory that was constructed in 1934. Continuous efforts into restoring the place are being held today, though.
