The Morris Museum of Art Is a non-profit organization which was established in 1985. It was founded as a fitting tribute to the parents of William S. Morris namely William Shivers Morris, Jr. and Florence Hill Morris.

In 1989, the foundation acquired 230 paintings from Robert P. Coggins, a famous Southern art lover and patron. This was the first set of art exhibit that initiates the opening of the museum. Another important facet that happened that year was the building of a library intended for research which later became the Center for the Study of Southern Art.

In 1992, The Morris Museum was opened to the public and was visited by over 10,000 guests in the first two moths of operation.

In September 2002, The Museum celebrated its tenth year and its founder, William S Morris III envisioned a future in which the museum will fulfill a moral obligation of imparting education to the American people.

At present, the museum houses more than 3,000 works of art, the museum acts as a host for various exhibitions, programs about art, musical performances, and hands-on courses.
