One of the oldest zoos in Indiana, the Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden opened in 1928 to cater to children and adults alike in Evansville, Indiana. The zoo features some 200 species as well as up to 700 animals that roam freely in the 50 acre park. The park portrays the natural habitat of the animals copying its home that is filled with exotic plants, trees as well as wildflowers.
It is founded by local businessmen in the city of Evansville, in 1928. The zoo initially only had two lion cubs, antelopes and an elephant. Today, with some major renovations and expansions throughout the years, the zoo boasts of several exhibits including a large tropical rainforest replica. The zoo used to have at least 2 zoos, the other one was filled to accommodate an additional 150 animals.
The zoo and its exhibits promise to foster the preservation of natural species as well as the different living systems in the world. The zoo furthermore takes part in conservation efforts of many endangered animals; one of its top priorities is the Langur Monkeys.
