Open from April to October, the Old Lighthouse Museum is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Indiana. It is located in Michigan City, and is open to the public for tours during its open season, as indicated above.
The history of the Old Lighthouse Museum started in 1835 when the city?s founder, Isaac Elston, decided to loan a part of his property to build a lighthouse. He knew that this will be a great boost to the harbor and city?s status, as the waterways were very important back then.
The lighthouse started operating in the late 1830s. The Old Lighthouse Museum, on the other hand, opened in 1973. It was greatly restored as it stood vacant for about 25 years. The displays inside the museum were donated by citizens.
