Snake Alley was built in 1898 by three German immigrants and builders. It was fashioned after the French vineyard paths to connect the business district downtown to the shopping area uphill. It serves as a way to cut through the steep Heritage Hill.

Distinguished by Ripley?s Believe It or Not as the world?s most crooked street, Snake Alley is comprised of two quarter curves and five half curves through a total span of 275 feet with an inclination of 21%. It is made of blueclay bricks and limestone.

Today, one way, downhill traffic is only allowed through Snake Alley. This is mostly because of the dangers that the street?s steepness poses to people. However, annual uphill bike races are held here, known as the Snake Alley Criterium.
