A United States Army facility built in 1827, the Fort Leavenworth is the oldest active US Army post that is located west of Mississippi River. It is still in use today, after almost two centuries of being constructed.
Fort Leavenworth is best known as the ?intellectual center of the army?. It was named after Colonel Henry Leavenworth, who led the establishment of the fort that will then serve as the forward base in protecting the Santa Fe Trail.
Fort Leavenworth is one of the most important historic military installations in the whole nation and its old department. An area inside it has been listed as National Historic Landmark and the whole military site became a part of the new Freedom?s Frontier National Heritage Area.
