Although, Clark Mansion may seem like a modest, two-story brick house today, it is already a considered lavish structure back in the early 1800s, when it was constructed. Built for the former Kentucky governor, James Clark, in 1813, the building is also known as the Holly Rood or as the Governor James A. Clark Mansion.

The Clark Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It was deemed historically significant for its Georgian style architecture, and for being one of early mansions in the area. Of course, it also helps that the man is the very source of the county?s name.

Recent updates say that the Clark Mansion will be further restored by the local Clark County-Winchester Heritage Commission. This group is composed of descendants of various pioneers of Clark County.
