The Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park got its name after the tiny Pennyroyal plant that was found in the woodlands that surround the site. It was created as a resort park in 1954 and is still considered to be home to some of the most beautiful forested land in the state. It is located adjacent the over fifteen thousand acres of the Pennyrile Forest that showcases magnificent hardwood trees.
For recreation, visitors of the Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park can enjoy birding, camping, boating, canoeing, equine camping, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, and swimming. There are also basketball and tennis courts at the site, as well as an 18-hole and miniature golf courses.
