The University Of Maine Museum Of Art helps people of Maine and the University community enrich their cultural lives by holding exhibitions, acquiring and preserving collections, and establishing educational programming that is designed to promote understanding of the visual arts, particularly on the modern and contemporary arts. Through the Museum, the University of Maine fulfills in mission to advance research, teaching, and educational outreach, as well as to provide people a center suitable of aesthetic engagement for its audiences.

The Museum?s Art Collection was established under the leadership of Vincent Hartgen in 1946. Hartgen was the faculty member of the Department of Art and the curator of the Art Collection. He wanted to provide significant opportunities for the people of Maine to experience and learn more about the visual arts as well as their histories and cultural meanings.

Today, the Museum remains to be the only institution that is owned by the Citizens of the State of Maine that houses a permanent fine arts collection, which makes it a significant resource center when it comes to historic and contemporary art.
