On Highway 26, there?s this very long fence that runs for miles. What makes it remarkable is that shoes are actually hanging in it. It is called the Shoe Fence and is actually attracting people to come and see it.
People believe that the Shoe Fence started out just like any other fence in the country before wood treating was invented. Back then, to prolong the life of a wooden post, farmers put almost anything on top of them, to guard them from the harsh outdoor conditions and prevent them from rotting.
This may have been the start of the now popular Shoe Fence between Northport and Ogallala, Nebraska. Most visitors also contribute their own pairs, helping the collection continuously grow.
